The Appeal Court today (Nov 22) suspended a travel ban imposed on former President's Secretary Lalith Weeratunga over a misappropriation case.
Weeratunga was convicted by the Colombo High Court for misusing Rs 600 million worth funds of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission to distribute 'sil fabric' - for devotees, during the 2015 presidential election.
His passport too had been impounded by the High Court.
However, the former President's Secretary had appealed against the verdict, and through a motion had sought permission of the Appeal Court to travel overseas.
Accordingly, the Appeal Court had instructed the Registrar of the Colombo High Court to release Weeratunga's passport.
