Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court challenging the Commercial High Court's verdict which ruled that the latter had violated the Intellectual Property Act.
On January 11, the Court ordered MP Weeranwangsa to pay a compensation of Rs 1 million to JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva for reproducing the principles of the JVP in the book he authored under the title ‘Nattha Wenuwata Attha’ (Truth instead of Lies). Court had also imposed an interim order on the publishing or the sale of the book.
Accordingly, Mr. Weerawansa filed an appeal at the Supreme Court claiming that the Commercial High Court's verdict was erroneous.
The JVP General Secretary claimed that MP Weerawansa - a former member of the JVP, had published certain documents which were discussed at a JVP central committee meeting.
* * Initially, the JVP revealed that the compensation to be paid was Rs 10 million. However, subsequently the National Freedom Front refuted the report stating that it was only Rs 1 million that had to be paid as compensation.
