The Colombo Fort Magistrate today granted bail to the National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa after over two months in remand custody. Earlier his bail applications were rejected twice by the court on various grounds.
He was released under strict bail conditions of a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and two sureties of Rs. 500,000 each. The magistrate also imposed a travel ban on him.
MP Wimal Weerawansa was arrested on January 10 for allegedly misusing 40 vehicles belonging to the State Engineering Corporation (SEC) while functioning as the Housing, Construction and Engineering Services Minister. He also commenced a huger strike in the prisons demandig bail but gave up after three days.
