The writ petition seeking an order to be issued to the Elections Commission (EC) to conduct the provincial elections has been fixed for August 27 by the Supreme Court today (Jul 31).
Initially, court ordered that the petition would be taken up on September 9, but had revised course after a motion had been filed seeking to hear the case at the earliest by considering it as a matter of national importance.
The petition had been filed by the Truth Seekers Movemement seeking a court order instructing the EC to conduct the elections for the provincial councils which stand expired at present.
EC Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya and the other members of the Commission had been named as respondents to the petition.
The petitioners argue that the government has been taking steps to deprive the people of their right to vote by citing issues concerning the delimitation report which demarcates electoral boundaries for the elections.
The terms of eight provincial councils have expired at present.
