An unbeaten knock of 87 by England debutant Ben Foakes saw England score 321 for the loss of eight wickets at the end of Day 1 in the first Test match that is being played in Galle.
England got off to a disastrous start as they lost five wickets for 113 runs during the first session of play.
From the Lankan camp, spinner Dilruwan Perera was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed four scalps for 70 runs.
Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Rangana Herath who is playing his final Test match for the country reached another milestone as he picked up his 100th Test wicket in Galle.
