Sri Lanka head coach Chris Silverwood and consultant coach Mahela Jayawardena have resigned following Sri Lanka’s early exit from the ongoing World Cup. Silverwood’s resignation comes just days after he was given an extension until Sri Lanka’s tour of England in August.
Silverwood, the former England fast bowler, was signed by SLC on a two-year deal as head coach of the Sri Lanka men's national team. After finishing his two-year term, SLC extended his contract until the end of the T20 World Cup. However, due to the team’s early exit, there was pressure on SLC to sever its ties with the Englishman.
Meanwhile, Jayawardena, who was appointed consultant coach of the Sri Lanka men's senior team, as well as the men's Under-19 and Sri Lanka A teams in January 2022, has also decided to leave. The former captain was responsible for the overall cricketing elements of the national teams and provided strategic support for players and management at SLC's high-performance centre. Following Sri Lanka’s poor performance at the 50-over World Cup in India, SLC transferred some of his responsibilities to Sanath Jayasuriya.
