Chilaw Marians Cricket Club, one of Sri Lanka’s premier sides that features both men and women teams at domestic competitions organised by Sri Lanka Cricket, will felicitate Chamari Athapaththu at a special ceremony to be held at the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo.
Athapaththu, currently the world’s top ranked women’s batter in One Day Internationals, is the captain of both the Sri Lanka women’s team as well as Chilaw Marians.
The 34-year-old batting allrounder has been representing Sri Lanka since 2009, and is rated as the country’s most successful women’s cricketer of all time.
She has raked up 3513 runs and claimed 29 wickets as a right-arm off-spinner, and has nine centuries and 16 half centuries under her belt in 101 matches.
Her best knock in Women’s ODIs of 195 not out came against South Africa in her last outing played at Potchefstroom.
In Women’s T20Is, Athapaththu has a tally of 2957 runs and claimed 48 wickets in 131 outings, with two centuries and 10 half centuries.
The felicitation ceremony will begin at 5.00p.m. today as the organisers have planned to release a song composed to honour her services to women’s cricket in Sri Lanka.
Sports Minsiter Harin Fernando, SLC President Shammi Silva, former cricketing greats Aravinda de Silva and Sanath Jayasuriya are expected to grace the occasion as special guests.
