Carrom: Schoolboys topple top seeds at National Championship

Top seeds Nishantha Fernando and Lahiru Eshan were beaten at the 47th National Carrom Championship organised and conducted by the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka. The event was worked off at the Carrom Federation Headquarters in Maharagama.   They were beaten in the pre-quarter-finals by two schoolboys, Sasrika Muthunayake and Minoj Ravindu of Prince of Wales’ College by 25/23.   Thus the two schoolboys entered the quarter-finals but were unlucky to be beaten by Udesh Chandima and Hasitha Anuruddha at that point.   In the women’s segment top seeds Joseph Roshita and Chalani Lakmali maintained their supremacy right throughout the Nationals to emerge winners in the doubles.   Results of matches played during last weekend:   Men’s Doubles quarter-finals: (1) Udesh Chandima/Hasitha Anuruddha beat Srasrika Muthunayake/Minoj Ravindu 25/18, 25/12; (2) Chamil Cooray/Brindly Wickramasinghe beat M.T.M. Hilmy/M.F.M. Fakir 25/14, 22/25, 25/9; (3) M. Sherifdeen /Charith Madusanka beat Dimal Senaratne/Lahiru Perera 19/25, 25/13, 25/19; (4) M. Shaheed/Anas Ahamed beat T.T. Naotunna/Suraj Maduwantha 25/13, 25/5.   Semi-finals: (1) Chamil/Brindly beat Udesh/Hasitha 25/13, 25/7; (2) M. Sherifdeen /Charith beat Shaheed/Anas 25/3, 25/22.   Final: Chamil Cooray/Brindly Wickramasinghe beat M. Sherifdeen/Charith Madusanka 25/6, 25/17.   Women’s Doubles semi-finals: (1) Joseph Roshita/Chalani Liyanage beat Maduwanthi Gunadasa/Madusha Vithana 25/0, 25/6; (2) Madushika Kanchanamala/Joseph Dilka beat Sadini Nirasha/Tharushi Himahansika 25/15, 5/25, 25/4.   Final: Roshita/Chalani beat Kanchanamala/Dilka 25/13, 25/24.   Veterans Singles semi-finals: (1) A.W.M. Ikram beat H.R. Soysa 22/25, 25/17, 21/19; (2) Upali Premachandra beat N.P.K. Fernando 25/15, 25/5.
