The Sri Lanka Cricket Scorers Association (SLCS) honoured its members at the inaugural Awards Night at Sasakawa Hall, Kollupitiya amidst a large gathering, under the guidance of its president Chaminda de Silva and its committee.
Fazal Mohamed an experienced scorer who is involved in scoring at schools, clubs and international level had the honour winning the best scorers prize while another experienced scorer Thushara Cooray who is also in the same category as Fazal, walked away with the most popular scorer’s award.
The duo were fittingly worthy winners and Thushara alias “Rahu Kalam” as he is popularly known to the local and international journalists was honoured with another award for his services as a scorer for nearly three decades which involves over 300 international matches.
Apart from that Sumith Guanawardena who bagged two awards -- for the best disciplined scorer and the scorer of the year while Niluka Amarasena and Madawa Fernando took away the awards for the best up and coming scorer in the ladies and men’s categories.
The SLCSA also honoured the umpires and match referees with two most popular awards with Ravindra Wimalasiri and Nalliah Deverajan bagging them. Long standing members of SLCS Francke, F.M. Jayawardena and Anura Ratnayake along with Ajith C.S. Perera, Asoka de Silva and D.A.S. Dissanayake were bestowed with life membership for their tireless efforts and contributions for the development of SLCS.
The concept mooted by Chaminda de Silva was the first ever to be held in the SLCS history of 15 years and it turned out to be a memorable event for the deserving recipients who are a breed that is doing an enormous job behind the curtain to update the happenings in the cricket field be it local or international matches being held in Sri Lanka.
Of course it was held in a grand scale based on similar lines of the ICC or SLC award ceremonies, though way behind the mentioned two, the SLCS would no doubt be happy that a start to recognize the efforts of their members has been given and Chaminda mentioned that they look forward to improve from here on.
Chaminda de Silva, President of SLCS further added that when they formed in the year 2000 they had only handful of members but today they have over 300 comprising of 118 full time members and over 200 affiliated and non-affiliated members.
Sri Lanka’s first Test cricket captain Bandula Warnapura was the chief guest while former Sri Lanka cricket captain T.M. Dilshan graced the occasion as the guest of honour.
