Expressing their solidarity to the plight their fellow citizens have faced due to floods, the Sri Lanka cricket team has made a contribution of Rs. 1 Million to aid flood relief through the Cricket Aid programme conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
In a short message to the nation aired on television and via social media, Sri Lanka captain Angelo Matthews expressed the distress of the national team, away in England and said "we are shocked and saddened to hear of the floods and landslides. We love you all and our thoughts and prayers are with you," the SLC stated.
According to SLC the contribution received for the fund from the team will be disbursed for potable water, medical supplies and other essentials.
"The team wore black armbands as they opened their tour at the first Test match in honour of those who have lost their lives. The Sri Lanka team, currently playing their first test of the Investec Test Series in UK, have made a donation of Rs. 1 Million to assist in national flood relief efforts through Cricket Aid. Cricket Aid, has commenced immediate relief operations, and is disbursing the funds initially via 500 aid packages containing the following items such as water bottles, bed sheet, undergarments, towel, sanitary napkins, skirts and sarongs and mats".
