The Matara Traders Association team led by Ruwin Kodituwakku regained the Matara Trade Association Challenge Cup defeating last year’s champions Dikwella Traders Association team by five runs at the Devinuwara public ground.
In the preliminary rounds the Matara Traders overcame Devinuwara TA by nine wickets, Weligama TA by 7 runs and Deniyaya TA by 8 runs to reach the final.
Teams from the Matara, Devinuwara, Dikwella, Weligama, Akuressa, Hakmana, Pitabeddara, Morawaka, Urubokka and Deniyaya traders association participated in this year’s Matara District Inter Traders Association Cricket Tournament while Kamburupitiya did not participate.
The five overs per side soft ball cricket tournament was first played in 2012 and has become an annual event which fosters fellowship and goodwill between traders of the district.
The Matara traders association team that participated in this year’s tournament was led by Ruwin Kodituwakku and comprised of Nihal Kaluarachchi, Priyantha Kumarasiri, Nishantha Devendra, K.G. Wimal, Wasika de Silva, H.M. Nuwan, Kelum Dhanthanarayana, Saman Indika, Shihan Shamsudeen, Priyantha Uyanahewa, Waruna Manamperi, Hasitha Manamperi, Suresh Anurudda and K.B. Suresh.
In addition to the challenge trophy H M C Nuwan of Matara TA walked away with the best batsman’s and man of the final trophies while Priyantha Uyanahewa was awarded the best bowlers trophy.
K.B. Suresh of Matara TA was named the Player of the tournament.
