Sport

A nineteen member men and women cycling pool have been formed for three international events to be held next year.

They are the Asian Cycling Road Championships to be held in Mynmar from February 6 to 13.

The Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia from April 4 to 15 and the Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

There are five women in the pool as well.

The Cycling Federation has formed the training programme and the budget allocation and has forwarded it for Sports Ministry for approval.

The Cycling Federation has budgeted Rs. Five Million for these events.

For the Commonwealth Games, the quota for Sri Lanka is three men and two women.

This has been done by the National Olympic Committee.

The Cycling Federation is hoping that the quota can be increased.

Currently the cyclists are training on their own with their clubs.

Once the administration is sorted out pool training will commence in December said Upali Ratnayake.

Sri Lankan cyclists took part in an international event in January, 2016 at the South Asian Games held in India where Jeevan Jayasinghe was adjudged as the fastest South Asian rider. Sri Lanka won two Gold, two Silver and two Bronze.
