The Ministry of Sports in collaboration with the Department of Sports launched the National Sports Calendar 2017 under the patronage of Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera during a ceremony held at the Sports Ministry Auditorium in Colombo.
This is the first ever of its kind published in Sri Lanka during the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of the Department of Sports Development.
The Minister of Sports emphasized that all Sports Bodies were not very active in 2016 and hope that they would perform their tasks much better.
He further noted that strict measures will be taken up against corrupt officials who neglect their duties.
He said that overall he is not satisfied with the results and the output of some of the officials.
The Department of Sports Development was founded in 1966 as a statutory institution established under the Ministry of Nationalised Services to promote both recreational and competitive sport, to plan, promote, develop and maintain the standard of sports in Sri Lanka and to control provide guidance to the National Sports Associations.
The main objective in preparing this is to bring about a calendar with well organised time frames for yearly tournaments and other activities conducted by all sports related stakeholders.
In this direction, the National Sports Calendar will serve the purpose of better coordination among all stakeholders of sports in Sri Lanka which in return will produce better results in the years to come.
