Rugby: Muthuthanthri to lead Sri Lanka at Rio Olympics qualifiers in Monaco

Sudarshana Muthuthanthri will lead the Sri Lanka 7s team at the Rio Olympic Qualifiers set to be held at the Stade Louise II Stadium in Monaco on June 18 and 19. 

Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) named the final squad with 12 players which includes a set of talented contenders from the domestic rugby clubs. 

Former 7s skipper Fazil Marija is among the key players apart from the skipper, Danushka Ranjan, Richard Dharmapala and Srinath Sooriyabandara. 

Initially the SLRFU named a squad of 19 men which was pruned down to 16 last week before the final 12 players who will represent Sri Lanka at the Olympic Qualifiers in Monaco. 

The Olympic Qualifier is known as Sri Lanka's final opportunity to reach the games to be held in Rio in 2016. 

Sri Lanka is slotted Group ‘B’ with Canada, Germany and Uruguay. 

Group 'A' consists of Ireland, Samoa, Tonga and Zimbabwe while Group 'C' includes Chile, Morocco, Russia and Tunisia. 

Hong Kong, Mexico, South Korea and Spain play from Group 'D'.  

The winner of each group will progress to the knockouts and the winner will qualify for the Rio Olympics Rugby 7s.

Sri Lanka 7s squad: Sudarshana Muthuthanthri, Danushka Ranjan, Roshan Weeraratne, Fazil Marija, Danush Dayan, Srinath Sooriyabandara, Richard Dharmapala, Suhiru Anthony, Kavindu Perera, Rochana Hettiarachchi, Jason Dissanayaka, Kanchana Ramanayaka.
