New Zealand named a pruned-down Test squad from 16 to 12 for the two-match home series against Sri Lanka which begins on December 10.
Among those who made it to the Test team are Mark Craig and Martin Guptill, who have had less impressive figures than others named in the side.
The Black Caps have dropped fast bowlers Matt Henry and Mitchell McClenaghan, wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi and opener Hamish Rutherford from the squad that toured Australia while allrounders Corey Anderson and James Neesham are in the injury list.
The series begins on Thursday (3) with the three-day warm-up game between New Zealand Board President's XI and the Sri Lankans.
