Sri Lanka was badly positioned at 78-5 after bowling out New Zealand for 221 at stumps on the first day of the second Test match which began at Wellington in New Zealand today (3). Sri Lanka’s call to bowl first was evidently proved accurate when the hosts failed to live up to the expectations against a tight seam attack which comprised four bowlers. Kane Williamson top scored with a 115-ball 69 inclusive of nine fours while Hamish Rutherford (37) and Ross Taylor (35) tried their best to confront the Sri Lankan seamers. Nuwan Pradeep picked four wickets while Suranga Lakmal picked three and Dhammika Prasad claimed two. The remaining scalp went to skipper Angelo Mathews. However Sri Lanka too had to pay the price for offering wrong shots, as the New Zealanders did and lost wickets at quick sessions with Doug Bracewell picking three of them. New Zealand 221 all out (55.1) (Hamish Rutherford 37, Kane Williamson 69, Ross Taylor 35, James Neesham 15, Doug Bracewell 16, Nuwan Pradeep 4/63, Suranga Lakmal 3/71, Dhammika Prasad 2/50) Sri Lanka 78 for 5 wickets (25.4) at stumps Day 1 (Dimuth Karunaratne 16, Kumar Sangakkara 33n.o, Angelo Mathews 15, Doug Bracewell 3/23)
