A few days ago, if anyone had told us that there would be a game to rival the match against South Africa we would have argued that it was not possible. But this week, Sri Lanka figured in yet another heart stopper against England that left us all amazed-and happy-that we were emerging as the team to watch in the 2007 World Cup. |

Intriguingly so far it seems that only the Sri Lankan cricketers have taken the maximum use of the tuition classes given by their coach Tom Moody and right now one of the top contenders for a berth among the Super Fours of the tournament. The other hiredhands among the other top rankers have failed while the fate of Zimbabwean Duncan Fletcher who is in charge of the English camp will be known only after their mountainous task of beating the top contenders Australia this evening. |

After the disastrous game against South Africa, the Sri Lankans needed to come back strongly. On paper West Indies and England were the teams to beat in the super eights state. Ireland of course needs not be mentioned. Three teams where victory is essental to progress steadily in the competition. |

Former Sri Lanka opening batsman Sidath Wettimuny who came into fame by scoring the island’s first test century at Lord’s by making an epic 191 in their maiden tour of England in 1982, and later went on to become a respected cricket administrator and a national selector thinks that the Lankan team is on the right path and are giving all the signals that they have the capability of making it to the wire. |
