Don’t spare yourself at this spa

A five star experience whenever you feel like a manicure or pedicure, a massage or even a haircut. This is what Colombo’s newest salon and spa situated down Maitland Crescent offers. Sleek, warm and welcoming Jaal Spa and Salon with its wide-open space with white walls and huge glass windows and doors, makes you feel like you can get away and pamper yourself.

Jalani Premadasa

Jalani Premadasa, the brains behind all this, says she felt the need to get into something through which she could, in a sense, help women feel good about themselves.

She went on to say how she has noticed that this is a growing industry and not just in Colombo but also in the villages. “From the social work I do, I have noticed that more and more women are getting into beauty culture, bridal dressing and so on.”

An accountant by profession, Jalani says she comes from a business-oriented family. “That’s the reason I have a knack for it. And I have a wonderful spouse who is encouraging.”

Playing around with names, she says she wanted a name that could be identified with her. “I’m a particular person” she says, adding that when people know she is behind it they will know that they are walking into an establishment with quality.

Jaal has an area to dress brides and the spa seems like just the kind of place you would want to go to, to get away from the bustle of life where they offer massages, slimming treatments, reflexology just to name a few. And the best part is that it is not just a place for ladies but for gents as well.

“We have some equipment from abroad to cater to today’s market,” says Jalani. The machine called the PPx for instance, sounds almost like a miracle machine to help with permanent hair removal, the treatment of acute acne and all stages of acne, dark spots, varicose veins and non surgical face lifts. “What is best is that there is no pain involved. The treatment generally, takes around five to eight sessions and it helps rejuvenate your skin,” she says. This will be part of their facial package.

Ornate interior and a section of the spa.

The building was designed by architect Arosha Perera. “We wanted to go with something very different so that those walking in would instantly feel as though they are in for a distinct experience,” Jalani said. The walls in the salon area are white, with gold leaves on the ceiling –the architect’s idea. The spa area on the first floor of the building is dark, “to create a cosy feel to it” because the therapies involved need a lot of cosiness and comfort.

Jalani has a staff of experienced hair stylists and well trained beauticians and therapists. “They have all had experience here and abroad,” she said adding that they use reputed products such as Thalgo, Sothy’s, L'Oréal and DermaRx.

The atmosphere is created from the moment you arrive with a cold towel and freshly made drinks when you walk in. And a few months from now, you can even sit down and have a coffee after you get your hair cut as there are plans to open a small café just outside the salon.
