CHASING AND RETRIEVING
This is a method used in fielding when the ball has been struck past a fielder, who then has to turn and chase the ball, moving away from the batter. This method is used when the ball is travelling towards the boundary. It is a very effective, and easy to learn method.
Once the fielder assesses the line of the ball travelling away from him, the fielder will turn to face the ball and move speedily onto a line slightly to the non- throwing side of the ball.
Nearing the ball, the body begins to move into a low position. Once the fielder reaches the ball, he will place the same leg as the throwing arm, (eg. Right leg for right arm throwers) on the throwing hand side of the body and pick up the ball just outside his non - throwing foot by bending lower from the front (right) knee.
Next stage would be to freeze, or break your forward movement without stepping forward, and transfer momentum by pivoting on the trailing back foot to bring the body forward to a side - on position to the target, aiming your over arm throw. Right handed fielders turn anti-clockwise and left handed fielders turn clockwise.
You could achieve a good throw by rotating hips and shoulders over front leg (like in bowling) and follow through with the arms, for a good complete throw.
If the distance for the throw is long (eg. from the boundary line), then you should use the CROW HOP METHOD of throwing to gain the required distance.
