My favourite extra-curricular activity
12 – 14 years
By Sharala Jayakumara (13 years), Girls' High School, Kandy

Extra-curricular activities mean the activities carried out outside school hours. My favourite extra-curricular activity is gymnastics. Some people think that gymnastics is a very dangerous and scary sport. Yes, I also agree to it. We feel scared when we do it first time. However, it becomes normal with time.

Gymnastics has different exercises. Some of them are difficult and others are easy. For example, forward roll and backward roll are easy. Backhand spring is difficult. Every gymnastic player has to do these exercises. These exercises can be carried out on the floor, beam and horse. Beam is made of wood and covered with thick cloth. Horse is a piece of gymnastic equipment for vaulting. Before starting, a gymnastic player has to do stretching and warm-up exercises.

Gymnastic players around the world participate in international competitions such as the Olympic Games. Russian and Japanese gymnastic players appear to be cleverer than the gymnastic players in other countries.

Mrs. Olga Corbet was a great gymnastic player from Belarus. In the Munich Olympics, she won two individual gold medals for floor and beam exercises. She won another gold medal for a team event.
I think gymnastics is the world's greatest sport.

Do you help your parents at home ?

9 –11 years

By Uzma Khan (9 years), Muslim Ladies' College

Yes, of course, I do help my parents at home. I am the eldest child in the family. So it is always "Uzma do this," "Uzma do that." My parents' fingers are every time pointed towards me.

Some of the work I really enjoy and some I don't. I like cutting vegetables, adding spices, stirring curries and polishing my father's shoes. The job that I hate most, is sweeping. But my mother makes me sweep and arrange our room everyday. She looks at my long, unhappy face and says that I must learn these things when I'm young.

Whenever I don't have classes I look after my brothers till my mother comes from the university. Helping my father is very easy as I have less work. I feel very happy and proud when my parents say, "Thank you very much Uzma."

I know that I can earn lots of blessings from God by helping my parents and making them happy.

What I like best about school

8 years and below

By Dinithi Jayasekera (8+ years), All Nations International School

What I like best about school, is Art and Craft. My Art and Craft teacher's name is Miss. Debby. She is a Korean teacher. She teaches many things for us to make.

One day we made a mask with a balloon. She knows lots of things about art and crafts. We use different things imported from Korea to make art and crafts. We form groups and share these things. With multi-coloured items, we make animals, we decorate wall hangings. We get immense happiness during the Art and Craft period.

If you visit our school you too would like to make these things.
