Water Babies
By Tahnee Hopman, Pic by Sanka Vidanagama

In 19th century England, one little boy – one of many boys who were forced to become chimney sweeps, decided that he wanted to be clean, and not covered in soot all the time.

Working under a cruel master – Mr. Grimes, Tom the chimney sweep finds it difficult to be as clean as he would like. One day though, after falling down the chimney into the bedroom of a girl named Ellie and being chased out of the house, Tom fell into a river, and there began his underwater adventures to the "end of nowhere." His adventures in this new world are many, and once he is joined by Ellie, Tom's life changes even more.

What follows is a magical tale, and if you want to know the story, come over to the Bishops College Auditorium where the students of the Clare de Silva School of Speech and Drama enact the fairytale for land babies on October 11 and 12.

Behind the story of the water babies also lies historical change in the society of the London chimney sweeps, whose hardship was put to an end after the book was written by Charles Kingsley.

Around 70 young boys and girls take on the much loved roles of Tom, Ellie, Mrs. Doasyouwouldbedoneby and Mrs. Bedonebyasyoudid and of course the water babies and underwater creatures. Tickets for the show are priced at Rs. 1000, 750 and 500 and are available at the Bishops College Auditorium.
