The Supreme Court on Monday terminated proceedings in the Lanka Marine Services (LMS) after finding that both the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption had made satisfactory progress on their investigations. Both CID and Bribery Commission investigations are still in progress but the CID has submitted its findings so far to the Attorney General for advice. A source close to the case said this move might be a sign that indictments will be filed.
A Bribery Commission source told The Sunday Times FT that the investigation is still ongoing and that the Court has not given any timeline or date to report back. "The Supreme Court was satisfied with our progress and we are proceeding ahead." Once the investigation is complete, it is up to the Commission to take action based on their findings. According to the source, several people have given statements.
Earlier one of the respondents in the case, now former Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera was called in for questioning as part of the investigation.
The LMS judgment said Dr. Jayasundera was unfit to hold public office, and fined Rs.500,000 as compensation to the state and was asked to leave his position as Treasury Secretary. Others who were likely summoned for questioning as part of the investigation were John Keells Holdings (JKH) Chairman Mr. Susantha Ratnayake among others. |
