A partial solar eclipse occurring tomorrow and lasting over two hours will be visible to people in Sri Lanka, says the Meteorology Department.
The eclipse will begin at 2.02 pm and end at 4.12 pm, and will be at its maximum at 3.11 pm. People who wish to see the eclipse are advised to use a solar filter or very dark welder’s glasses. On no account should anyone look up directly at the sun, the Meteorology Department warns. Exposure lasting even a fraction of a second can cause permanent damage to the eye and can even lead to permanent loss of vision.
This will be the first solar eclipse for 2009. The next eclipse will occur on July 22.
The United Nations has declared 2009 the International Year of Astronomy.
