Many Christians are aware of the Gospel values, but how many practise them? To know and to learn is only half the journey; it becomes complete only when lived.
Clarence Saverimuttu, who passed away on February 1, was someone who lived the Gospel. Parishioners of St. Lawrence’s Church, Wellawatte, will wholeheartedly bear witness to this.
I came to know Clarence only recently, but it was a privilege to have known him even at this late stage. There was something indefinable that struck me on our first meeting.
He impressed me as a Christian who lived in a simple manner that reflected total faith in the Almighty. He had an unfailing hope in Divine Providence, and he loved the spiritual over the material.
He would brave the hazards of travel through terrorist territory to participate in the annual festival of Our Lady of Madhu.
His health problem did not deter him from an active lifestyle.
Clarence’s unassuming manner, his spontaneous generosity, and his practice of the theological virtues were the hallmarks of his stewardship.
We may not be able to emulate his magnanimity, but we can strive to imitate his childlike simplicity and trust in the Fatherhood of God.
