It has long been a dream of many Sri Lankans to further their education and broaden their horizons by studying overseas and the UK has always been a particularly popular choice. Many of these students are attracted to London by the cultural diversity and wealth of opportunities that the city offers them, there are not many universities in the world where you can catch up on your lecture notes while looking at some of the country's most iconic landmarks!
London Metropolitan University is the largest single university in London with over 34,000 students and was originally established in 1848. It is the most popular university in London with international students and the second most popular choice with all international students coming to the UK. They have a large international student community with over 7,000 undergraduate and postgraduate international students from 155 countries and a good deal of experience of working with students from Sri Lanka.
From this experience they are aware that not all Sri Lankan students are typical school leavers with A'levels and that many have taken other courses which can qualify them for entry, often into the 2nd or 3rd year of an Undergraduate degree. This means that with perhaps only 1 year of study in the UK you can graduate with a degree from London Metropolitan University. Students with NCC Diplomas can start a BSc Computing in year 2 and holders of the Advanced Diploma are eligible for year 3 entry. ACCA holders can enter year 2 or 3 of the BA Accounting course or directly onto a Postgraduate course depending on whether they have completed ACCA part 1, 2 or 3. CIMA Certificate/ Foundation graduates can join year 2 of BA Accounting and Finance while Managerial/ Intermediate Level students can proceed directly to year 3. They also welcome applications from HND, CIM, AAT/ CAT and ABE holders (as well as many other similar courses) who may also be entitled to advanced entry.
London Metropolitan University offers the largest choice of courses in London with over 260 undergraduate and 225 postgraduate courses as well as pre-degree and English Language programmes to prepare students to study in the UK. Their courses are planned in consultation with employers and examining bodies in commerce, industry, the world of art and design, the financial services industries and the professions. The end result is high quality courses that are of direct relevance to their field which lead to our students being highly sought after in the graduate employment market. Their alumni can be found working in most of the major City organizations such as Barclays, BBC worldwide, Bank of England, Merrill Lynch, EMI group, Financial Times, Goldman Sachs, KPMG, Bank of America, Microsoft and many other household names. The most recent (2005) Quality Assurance Agency review of the university awarded it "broad confidence" with a number of departments receiving very positive reviews (www.qaa.ac.uk).
They are based in the centre of London which means that some of the world's finest museums, galleries and exhibitions are on your doorstep and you are studying in the heart of one of the most exciting cities in the world.
The popularity of studying in the UK has rapidly increased in the last year due to the new International Graduates Scheme which came into effect on 1 May 2007. International students who have acquired a bachelors degree or higher qualification in any subject from a recognised UK higher’s education institution will be able to apply to stay on to work in the UK for up to one year. This is a great opportunity to put into practice the skills that you have learnt during your course and gain some valuable work experience to help make your CV stand out from the crowd when you return to Sri Lanka and start job hunting.
However they understand that studying is not all work, work, work! They are the number one sports university in London, the UK's number one university for both men's and women's hockey and have 2 fitness gyms with a wide selection of machines, weights and classes. After all that hard work our students like to let off some steam in the award winning entertainment facilities and by taking part in the huge number of events and societies on offer.
There is always something to entertain, educate and excite in London so you don't need to worry about being bored! After all, as Samuel Johnson (writer of the first English dictionary) said "when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life"!
We, as the officially appointed representative in Sri Lanka for London Metropolitan University in Sri Lanka will assist students with the complete admission process and are able to give detailed information about the university and life as a student in London.
