Sixth world quiz championships on June 6
 

International Quiz Association (IQA), the word's premier Quiz organization, will be conducting its sixth annual World Quizzing Championships on June 6 th this year. The aim of IQA is to elevate quiz to a similar status as other mind -sports like Chess and Bridge. It has been working with quiz organizations from around the world in order to run the World Quizzing Championships. This year too, Sri Lankan quiz enthusiasts have been granted the opportunity to compete in this prestigious world event.

World Quizzing Championships (WQC) is an individual written quiz that is organized around the globe at almost the same time. The quiz consists of 240 questions, to be answered in a maximum allowed time of 90 minutes. The questions are divided over 8 categories of 30 questions each. The eight categories broadly cover areas of history, Media, World, Lifestyle, Entertainment, Culture, Sports, and Sciences.
Last year, Mark Bythway of U.K won the WQC, while the number one ranked player in Sri Lanka was Lathika Niriella who incidentally was ranked 152 in the world. The top female Quizzer in the world last year was Dorjana Sirola of Croatia who was ranked 12 overall. Nipunika Wijeyratne was the highest ranked female quizzer in Sri Lanka as per the WQC 2008 rankings.

This year, Sri Lankan Quizzers will compete against top contestants from countries such as U.K, U.S.A, Belgium, India, Estonia, Netherlands, Singapore, Malaysia, Finland, Norway, Croatia, France, Latvia, The Philippines, Germany and Australia.

According to Ruwan Senanayake, Sri Lanka representative of the IQA, all arrangements have been made to conduct the Sri Lanka leg of the World Quizzing Championships in Colombo. The quiz is open to all Sri Lankan nationals over 16 years of age,and will be conducted in English language.

The venue for the Sri Lanka leg will be the Post Graduate Institute of Management (PIM), 28, Leslie Ranagala Mawatha, Colombo 8. The quiz will be held from 4.00 p.m-7.00 p.m. on Saturday 6th June 2009.
