The brothers at war
This article is part of a continuing series on the ‘Mahavamsa,’ the recorded chronicle of Sri Lankan history

1. Nuno Prayer de Andrado, who was at the stores, was greatly disturbed when he heard of the plot of the Malabars. He got the help of an army which was under Salappu Arachchi, attacked and dispersed them. Thereafter the Malabar army came from land – to attack. This time, the Portuguese got the assistance of the Sinhala army, attacked and chased them away. In this battle, most of their soldiers died and great was the loss caused to the Malabar army. Whoever was left, fled to Sitawaka.

2. Meanwhile, King Buwanekabahu, chased the Muslims from Colombo. They too went to Sitawaka. King Mayadunne gave protection to the Malabar soldiers, who came to him. He now worked in such a way as to create a rift between King Buwanekabahu and the Zamorin. King Mayadunne sought the help of the Zamorin to capture the kingdom of Kotte. Then he sent three commanders to help him.

3. A huge army was under their command. As soon as these armies arrived, King Mayadunne got ready for war. He ordered all the Sinhala youth to join the army. Those who did not respect this order, were to be punished. Those who listened to this announcement – deserted King Buwanekabahu and joined his army in large numbers. This made Buwanekabahu turn to the Portuguese for help. He sent some envoys to Goa – seeking help.

4. At this time, there was trouble in Goa too. But the Viceroy wanted to help the king. He sent an army under Aponso de Melo in 1527 A.D. Before they could arrive, King Mayadunne acted. He besieged the city of Kotte. It was a few Portuguese soldiers and about ten thousand Sinhala soldiers who provided security to the Kotte kingdom at this time.

5. The king of Kotte had hopes of getting a Portuguese army. Till this good news was conveyed through a merchant vessel, the army of Kotte made every attempt to safeguard the city. They somehow prevented the entry of the armies of King Mayadunne and the Malabars. The armies that left Goa were nearing Colombo. King Mayadunne then retreated to Sitawaka.

6. Malabars too went away. The Portuguese commander Martin Aponso de Melo and the officer in charge of the stores, Nuno Prayer de Andrado suggested that they should chase King Mayadunne. King Buwanekabahu objected to this idea. It was because he knew that the countrymen were quite supportive of King Mayadunne. He also entertained a fear, that by trying to give in to the request of the foreigner, he may bring danger to the country.

7. Moreover, by this time King Mayadunne had declared that he would not cause such trouble in the future. He had begged pardon from his brother and had even sent gifts to him. This made King Buwanekabahu have faith in his younger brother. When the request of the Portuguese was not granted, they went back.
As time passed, a change came about in King Mayadunne's attitude. He once again thought of besieging the city of Kotte.

8. It was 1536 A. D. now. With the help of the Malabar army, he thought of besieging the city, before the Portuguese could arrive. But Kotte was not a city to be captured. Right round the city is an oya, which is infested with fierce crocodiles. To enter the city, one has to follow four routes.
