UNSW is the place to be

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) is Australia's first international university attracting outstanding scholars and students from around the world. Its motto - Scientia Manu et Mente ('Knowledge by Hand and Mind') - encapsulates the University's central philosophy of balancing the practical and the scholarly.

UNSW was established in 1949 and has been receiving international students since 1951. Today, approximately one in five students at the University come from overseas and many of our recent students are the children and grandchildren of UNSW's original international students.

UNSW is highly regarded in the international academic community. It consistently scores highly in a range of national and international rankings including the following:

  • 45th in the world overall in the 2008 Times Higher Education - QS Report of World University Rankings
  • top 100 global universities in Newsweek and Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Academic Ranking of World Universities
  • 1st in the world for accounting research in the June 2007 edition of the international journal Accounting and Finance
  • 1st in Australia and 32nd in the world for the leading full-time MBA in the 2009 Financial Times (UK) ranking of the top 100 global MBA programmes
  • Consistently ranked as the leading Engineering Faculty in Australia
  • Maximum five-star rating for eleven key performance indicators in the 2009 Good Universities Guide.

NSW achieved a top score in the following categories: graduate starting salaries, positive graduate outcomes, teaching quality, student-staff ratio, student success in gaining full time employment, staff qualifications, international enrolments, research grants, acquisition of generic skills, research intensivity and cultural diversity.

A foundation member of the Group of Eight leading research universities in Australia, UNSW is also one of only three Australian institutions in the prestigious Universitas 21, a consortium of 17 leading universities in 10 countries. UNSW is a comprehensive teaching and research university with international recognition in photovoltaics, solar energy, quantum computing, interactive cinema and HIV/Aids research.

UNSW enjoys a vibrant and cosmopolitan campus life. Of the 45,000 students studying at UNSW, more than 9,000 are international students from over 130 countries. The University also maintains strong links with its international graduate community - the UNSW exchange programme has over 170 student exchange opportunities in 32 countries and there is an extensive network of alumni chapters throughout Asia.

Located in Sydney, Australia's largest city, UNSW is close to the city's main business hub, providing easy access to a wide range of academic, cultural and social activities. All three UNSW campuses - Kensington, Paddington and Canberra - provide a vibrant educational and communal environment. The 38 hectare Kensington site, the main UNSW campus, is located in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, approximately 20 minutes from the Central Business District and Sydney Harbour, and 10 minutes from popular east-coast beaches such as the famous Coogee Beach and Bondi Beach. The Kensington campus is also a 15-minute taxi-ride from Sydney International Airport.

In 2009, UNSW celebrates 60 years as one of Australia's foremost international research intensive universities and as the university of choice for over 180,000 graduates.
