A third round of talks between the Sri Lankan government and the IMF on the $1.9 billion loan is expected this month with the impeding visit of a Fund mission, contrary to reports that negotiations are over.
Fund officials have confirmed to Sri Lankan economist Dr Muttukrishna Sarvananthan (see details on Page 2), during a meeting in Washington, that another team would arrive in Colombo this month. The Central Bank has said loan negotiations are over and they are awaiting approval from the IMF board.
The media division of the IMF, in response to questions posed by email by the Sunday Times, said discussions with the authorities are still ongoing and “continuing now from headquarters’. The statement said ‘Fund support do not have a time limit and are completed when agreements are reached’. |
