Somaratna cruises to fifth Under 21 title - U21 Snooker Nationals

By M. Shamil Amit
Ryan Somaratna of OAC cruised through to his fifth Under 21 national snooker title with a convincing five frames to nil win over M.T.M. Nasoordeen of MSC in the final of the Under 21 National Snooker Championship played at the Billiards and Snooker Association billiards table in Reid Avenue yesterday.
Somaratna who emerged the national snooker runner up a few weeks ago won the first U21 national title in 2004 and then again for three years from 2006 to 2008 and was the hot favourite since the tournament began two weeks ago.

Somaratna’s opponent Nasoordeen had no answer as the nine frames final turned out to be a one horse race. Nasoordeen was forced to defend at all times but the experience Somaratna made some vital shots to rattle his opponent with ease.

The play off for the third place which was concurrently played at the same venue saw OAC’s Angelo Coonghe prevail over his club mate N. Badurdeen 3-1 in the seven frames encounter.

Results: Ryan Somaratna (OAC) beat M.T.M. Nasoordeen (MSC) 5/0 (69/32, 80/19, 57/28, 37/35, 57/35). Third place play off: Angelo Coonghe (OAC) beat N. Badurdeen (OAC) 3/1 (59/32, 16/47, 45/39, 39/37)
