Woman allegedly printed money for daily meals

By Damith Wickramaratne

Most people have to work hard for their daily meals, but this woman from Kalutara allegedly had her programme neatly cut out and money was never a problem for her. Neatly tucked inside their modest abode the woman was at work allegedly turning out counterfeit currency notes just for the day’s expenses, as she was to tell police later.

She and her husband who is now on the run were neither hasty nor greedy for big money although it was possible with the hi-tech equipment they owned. But the woman’s money business was busted earlier this week whenshe tendered two fake hundred rupee notes to buy vegetables at a pola.

The alert trader was quick to notice that the notes were not right, and brought the matter up with the police who in turned informed the CID. Detectives busted the racket after trailing the couple for a few days.

The woman told investigators that she only turned out money just for the day’s expenses and had no intention of mass-scale fraud. She said she had been doing this for six months only, but police believe they were in the business for several years.
