Stomach more sensitive than the mind
It was only a few weeks ago that people were complaining and thumping their breasts at the high prices of vegetables and fruits. This gave the Colombo municipality the bright idea of setting an example for people to grow their own food. It planted fruit-bearing trees and grown vegetables at the Town Hall roundabout on Friday. But by yesterday morning, it was apparent that the good intention had not borne fruit because some hungry people had taken away most of the fruits and vegetables. Pic: By Sanka Vidanagama.

Pride and prejudice: The Arjuna, Hashan chapter
When Jane Austen penned her classy novel Pride and Prejudice, I am sure the names of Hashan Tillekeratne and Arjuna Ranatunga may not have come to her equation at all. Yet, the present quagmire of cricket that has erupted around the two former Lankan cricketers at least has a lot to do with the title of that novel two centuries later.

Global 'dupli-macy' and what’s fair in war

It would be amusing if it were not so serious, to see how the United States of America is justifying the unlawful violation of the sovereignty of another nation in the pursuit of its single-minded objective, and its use of force in the execution of an unarmed though sworn enemy.

Diplomatic dilemma: Patriotic diatribes or dialogue with UN -- Political Column
Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) is an American non-profit organisation that monitors the US media. To hear some tell it, says FAIR, the intelligence clues that ultimately led to Osama bin Laden's hideout in Pakistan were generated by the use of torture. However, it adds that the evidence available so far does not bear this out.
Calling for mature political leadership -- Focus on Rights

Under creeping cover of the report of the Advisory Panel mandated by the United Nations Secretary General (UNSG), the Government of Sri Lanka appears to be leading the country even further down the precipitous slope of constitutional anarchy than it has gone so far.

When croc and man lived a ‘charmed’ life

Four-legged or no legged, big or small, ambling or slithering, whatever forms the natural dangers took, our ancestors seemed to have known how to deal with them. Not only did they deal with them effectively, be it elephant, snake or crocodile, they also passed down their knowledge, sometimes ingrained in stone to posterity.
