Shani Diluka: Grande dame of Piano

The Audience which gathered Friday night (August 26th) for the recital that SHANI DILUKA gave for the benefit of the Sri Lanka Cancer Society received a demonstration that passion and spirituality are certainly not contradicting forces. Recital by Shani Diluka presented by Alliance Francaise de Colombo.
SHANI DILUKA’s name is well known to those who follow the International Concert Scene and her recital at the Lionel Wendt was also her homecoming after a season unusually busy with concerts but also with a CD release.

For her programme, the Sri Lankan Pianist chose to offer a traversal of pre-romantic and romantic repertoire, opening with Beethoven’s first piano sonata and culminating with his ‘Appassionata’ Sonata. The audience’s whose absolute silence and stillness testified of the compelling and spellbinding power that SHANI DILUKA’s performance exudes.

For Beethoven’s Spring Sonata for Violin and Piano which closed the first half of her programme, SHANI DILUKA invited Gabriel LE MAGADURE to join her on the platform. The latter enjoys an enviable International Career as a Member of the Ebene Quartet in France , acknowledged by many as the Leading String Quartet of theirGeneration. In the bouquet of romantic solo pieces -Schumann’s Arabeske and two Chopin Waltzes – SHANI brought out the most subtle nuances out of a piano, this was on the verge of miraculous considering the challenging instrument which was provided to her.

A Well Deserved vociferous Standing Ovation Greeted the Artist ‘s at the end of her performance and the Audience would not let her go until She Extended Her Recital with Three Encores (repeats). The last of which being a rare unpublished Wagner piece which moved audience members to tears. - Pierre-Martin Juban.
