Tendulkar scores 10,000 runs in one-dayers

INDORE, India, March 31 (Reuters) - Sachin Tendulkar became the first player to score 10,000 runs in one-dayers as India scored 136 for one from 28 overs against Australia on Saturday. Tendulkar, 27, achieved the landmark when he scored a single to deep mid-off off leg-spinner Shane Warne to reach 34 not out in his 266th match. Tendulkar was on 56 after completing his 51st one-day 50 and Vangipurappu Laxman was 57 not out after India were asked to bat first by Australian skipper Steve Waugh, The two had raised 104 runs for the unbroken second wicket after Rahul Dravid, who replaced his out of form skipper Saurav Ganguly as opener, was dismissed for 15. Tendulkar raised his bat to acknowledge a standing ovation from 25,000 fans before Warne and Australian captain Steve Waugh congratulated him. Tendulkar, who slowed down nearing the landmark, had scored five fours in his knock, slashing paceman Glenn McGrath to the third man region for four and hitting swing bowler Damien Fleming for two fours in an over before driving Warne through cover for another boundary. He brought up his 51st half-century, off 66 balls, sweeping Warne to fine leg for four. Shock

Sanath sacked

In another shock move after the dissolution of the Cricket Board, the new interim committee's seelction panel yesterday sacked captain Sanath Jayasuriya from the one-day squad and named Russel Arnold as captain.

The move came after his suspended sentence for bringing the game to disrepute by thrwoing his helmet and the Asgiriya Test and also a string of failiures in the recent Test and one-day series against England.

However, the selection panel announced that Jayasuriya would be retained as captain for Test matches but said it would be reviewed at the end of the year.

New captain Russel Arnold who will lead the team for the tri-nation contest in Sharjah with Pakistan and New Zealand said it was a daunting task but he was ready to face the challenge.

Seelctin committee sources said they had not yet decided whether to retain Jaysuriya as a player for the one-day internationals. Jayasuriya was not available for comment yesterday.

Aussies thrash Sri Lanka

By Ben Rowse
Fiji proved there was life after Serevi when they trounced the West Indies in the opening round of the Hong Kong Sevens Friday, but they were eclipsed by a resurgent Australia who put on a try-extravaganza to thump Sri Lanka.

With sevens supremo Waisale Serevi axed from the squad by new coach Tomasi Cama, the Fijians came into the tournament with question marks hanging over their chances of avenging last year's defeat at the hands of New Zealand.

However, the Fijian sevens machine, sparked by their ônew Sereviö Saula Rabuka, ran in seven tries to rout the Caribbean debutants 47-0 in their opening Pool A match at the Hong Kong Stadium. Fijian captain Fero Lasagavibau, the only surviving member from last year's 31-5 finals loss, ran in a brace of tries, as did the powerful Veneniki Waqa and Dan Baleinadogo.ö I was pleased with the results. I tried out all my new players and they played well,ö said coach Cama.ö There were a few handling errors but we will talk about that later,ö said Cama, who is hoping to extend Fiji's four point lead over New Zealand and Australia following this fourth event of the International Rugby Board's 2001 World Sevens Series.

However, the Fijians, who are looking to win their 10th Hong Kong Sevens title, face stiff competition from an unheralded Australian side that is growing in confidence and stature with each tournament. Semi-finalists at the World Cup in Argentina in January and winners of the Wellington Sevens the following month, the Australians lived up to their billing as pre-tournament favourites by running in 10 tries ù including a hat-trick from Scott Burton ù to leave the lightweight Sri Lankans stumbling on the ropes in their Pool B match up. Australian coach Glen Ella, who has won four Hong Kong Sevens titles as a player, said his charges performed admirably in what was always going to be an easy first outing.

ô I'm happy. We played well. But it's difficult to gauge too much from that game. We need to be put under a bit more pressure.ö Eight-time winners in Hong Kong, New Zealand also demonstrated their prowess at the short game putting on a solid display of aggressive, running rugby to down a spirited Arabian Gulf team 43-5 in their Pool C clash.
