Ruhuna enter Cup quarters at STC 7s

Newcomers to rugby Ruhuna RFU entered the Cup quarter-finals of the Schools 'Sevens' at the Thomian Super Sevens - 2001 organised by the Old Thomians Rugby Football Union as part of their 150th anniversary on the first day at Longden Place yesterday.

This rugby fiesta provided plenty of excitement, specially in the schools section. Ruhunu RFC did well to score a 43-7 win over Science College. The S. Thomas' rugby sevens led by Jeevan Gunatilleke went one better to beat Sabaragamuwa 43-0.

St. Peter's who won the recent rugby sevens final in the schools section in the Kandy SC 7s international to beat Vidyartha 22-5, gave a fine exhibition of running rugby. 

They did well to beat Isipatana 19-0. They are fancied to be in the finals with Royal and S. Thomas 'A'.

The much looked forward to Present Boys vs Old Thomians match was played in semi-darkness. The Present Boys did well to dethrone OTSC 7-5 to win the Jason Martynstyne trophy awarded by the chief guest Mrs. D. Martynstyne.

In the old boys 10-a-side over 35 competition St. Anthony's Kandy did well to beat Thurstan 19-7. Maurice Joachim, G. Chandrasiri and Ranjit Jayaweera scored a try each. Joachim converted two tries. For Thurstan Tony Wimalasuriya scored the solitary try and converted it himself. 

In the second game Old Peterites beat beat S. Thomas' 12-5. For the Petes, Chinthaka Perera and Mizverdeen scored. Police fullback Perera converted his own try.

The competition will be continued today at 8.30 a.m.. The schools sevens final will kick off at 5.30 p.m.


Honours even at Katubedda

Honours were even at Katubedda yesterday where Lankans CC took on Nugegoda S &WC in their Sara Trophy encounter at the Campus Grounds. 

Batting first, Lankans CC were dismissed for 210 and Nugegoda S & WC had replied with 23 for the loss of no wicket. 

The match will be continued today at the same venue. 

Lankans CC - 210 (D. Gayanaga 51, C. Jayasinghe 42, L. Jayawardena 33; S.S.K. Udawatte 3 for 26, D.N. Kulasekera 3 for 83, B. Perera 2 for 33). NS &WC - 23 for no loss.-BM
