Infuriated top cop
A top cop in the central hills was not only infuriated but inebriated too.
He pulled an assault rifle and swayed to his jeep to travel on a mission
to assault a leading politician now in the news. He made no secret of it.
He kept shouting that he would get the man.
All this was because former PA top runger and now a United National
Front stalwart, S.B. Dissanayake, was waxing eloquent on TNL TV network
about the role of some cops in the Kandy district.
It took family members and friends a great deal of effort to restore
law and order in the top cop's home.
Secret mission
The sea faring big boss was on a secret mission, or so he thought until
his own men flagged him down for a security check. It took a while before
they stood to attention and saluted.
The mission – pay a late night call on a minister who had just taken
his oaths. The man chose to drive alone with no escorts or guards.
Who gave the order?
Controversy is growing over a high ranking Army official's order to shut
down gateways in Wanni and the East preventing an estimated 50,000 voters
from coming into security forces controlled areas to cast their votes.
Whilst some political parties are planning an election petition, a top
level inquiry now under way has brought out some interesting revelations.
If the order had been made purportedly on grounds that it was a decision
of the Security Council, when it was not so, a document available with
Alia shows another interesting aspect.
A senior officer attached to 23 Division responsible for the East had
asked the STF in that area to deploy Police commandos to prevent voters
crossing over to the Kalawanchikudi area. The officer had named the high
ranking official who issued the order and had wanted it carried out even
by the STF, over which he has no control.
The STF referred the matter to their Commandant in Colombo. The reply
– don't comply with that order. Allow the people to cross the bridge and
do not interfere with the free movement of people.
Little wonder western diplomatic missions in Colombo and the polls monitors
were puzzled. So is the hierarchy of the United National Front. |
