Talented Cambrian cricketer
By M.Shamil Amit
Prince of Wales Moratuwa is an institution which has produced talented
and top class cricketers in the past. The institution celebrated their
125th anniversary this year.
Another talented and brilliant cricketer emerging from this school is
Sahan Wijeratne who captains the side this season.
Sahan started the season with a bang this year when he cracked twin
centuries in their inter-school cricket match against Sri Jayawardenapura
MV earlier this month. This was only one of the achievements Sahan has
figured in.
When the Sunday Times wanted him to go back to his cricket career he
said he started playing cricket at the age of 11 representing the Under
13 team in 1995 and then captained the Under 13 team in 1997. During that
season he scored over 350 runs. He captained the Under 15 team in 1999
and captained the Under 17 team this year. For his achievements he was
made captain of the Under 17 national team to Bangladesh for the World
Cup.
Prior to that he was a member of Under 17 national side which won the
Asian Cup in Pakistan.
Whilst playing in Bangladesh he scored a century against Malaysia. He
also captained the Sri Lanka Under 17 against the Canadian national team.
Sahan is a player who has the distinction of captaining the junior national
team more than any other player during one season. In 1999 he received
the Milo cricket colours and this year he received the Piliyandala Zone
sports colours given to outstanding sportsmen.
Last month he went on a tour to Pakistan with the Under 19 squad and
in the ongoing cricket season Sahan has the honour of leading his school
team which he is doing it style.
In the four matches the school has played this season Sahan has scored
480 runs with three unbeaten centuries: one against Kingswood, Kandy and
two centuries against Sri Jayawardenapura MV... which is a rare feat any
schoolboy would cherish to achieve. He also played for the CCC side representing
them in the Under 23 cricket tournament organised by the BCCSL recently.
In time to come Sahan should be in the limelight and he is waiting eagerly
to show his batting prowess which will take him to even greater heights.
A player hungry for runs we should hear more of him when the school cricket
season gets into full swing.

Jerermy retains Mobil Cup
The Mobil Cup Sailing Regatta an annual event in the sailing calender of
the Ceylon Motor Yacht Club was successfully concluded at the Bolgoda Lake
recently.
Two events were worked - one for the Mobil Challenge Cup which had 17
competitors and the Optimist Challenge Cup, which was for children where
four competitors took part.
Regatta maestro Jeremy Bolling repeated his win of last year to take
the Mobil Cup in great style. Though he was way ahead of the other competitors,
the wind played a vital role which reduced his winning margin to a lesser
degree.
K.D.S.Kumara of the SL Navy came second while Anil Gunawardena was placed
third. "It was not Anil's day," said Jeremy adding, "He could have done
better".
The children's race was won by Akshan Jirasinghe. |
