Be a part of the Circle of Life

By Ruwanthi Herat Gunaratne
Christmas is nigh and it is the season for friends, family and above all togetherness. But, sadly, for some this is an experience they haven't had. They are the forgotten children of Sri Lanka.

Fortunately, the Circle of Life Trust Fund has once again come forward to present 'Circle of Life - Love, Peace and Joy for a Child', to spread the spirit of Christmas.

It all began with a simple dream last Christmas, which was made a reality on April 28 when Circle of Life was born. In the minds of the young artistes taking part in the second event on December 21 and 22 at the Bishop's College Auditorium, the cause remains the same - only the tune is different. "It is more on the lines of Christmas," says founder and producer, Michael Ranasinghe.

Other than raising funds for less fortunate children, the Trust is also keen on bringing out the best of the country's young talent.

Amongst those who are due to present their voices for this cause are Devashri De Silva, Druvi De Silva, Dilip Seneviratne, Dillain Joseph, The Old Joes' Chorale, Nadine Samarasinghe, Imani and Sonali, Malith, Chryshantha Perera and Voices in Harmony backed by Billy and his band Ezra. DJs Iraj and Tareeq are also due to do a guest spot.

The highlight of the evening will be 'Light a Candle', an original written and composed by Suresh of Suresh and Husni fame, sung by Dillain Joseph. This was originally written to assist the Association For Lighting A Candle (AFLAC) and first sung at a concert organized as a tribute to well-known musician Lylie Godridge.

Déja Vu who are also due to perform with their impressive new line-up and Nadine Samarasinghe, a 17-year-old singing sensation are all indeed happy to be part of this worthy cause. Another young artiste who stunned audiences last year at the Karaoke Championships, Devashri De Silva says, "I first got into music by singing as part of the church choir. So this is indeed an ideal situation. But it is not only carols that we are going to perform, there are also a few inspirational songs that have been added to the programme."

Druvi De Silva, who also launched himself as a gospel artiste said, "The main cause centres around children and that's what I like about it. That's why I wanted to be part of it."The Old Joes' Chorale will provide the true church spirit for the evening with 'Carol of the Bells' and 'Dreams', which they will perform. Dilip, a wizard when it comes to innovative music, is expected to give an enthralling performance at the piano.

Debug Computers, Startsports - the Newest Sports Gear and Wear Shop and Tikiri Savings from Seylan Bank have come forward as sponsors for the event while TNL 101.7 Lite 89.2 and TNL TV are the media sponsors. The Sunday Times is once again the Official Newspaper.

Tickets are now available at the Bishop's College Auditorium.
