Sudath ferries his boat to new heights
By Susitha R. Fernando
Sudath Devapriya is set to visit India soon with regard to work on his
latest film "Udu Gan Yamaya" (Upstream). The story written by Sudath himself
is based on what as everyone of us knows happened in the 1980's.
It is woven around the life of child whose father disappeared during
the terror period.
"This was my personal experience as I closely associated with some families
in which the children await the return of their fathers", Sudath said speaking
on his third film.
Speaking further on choosing a theme that he thought would be o f value
to the audience he said 'I have no idea who was right or wrong for the
unfortunate incidents that took place during this period'.
Joining the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation in 1983 as an assistant
director he was responsible for the production of a large number of children's
films.
"What I wanted to highlight was the suffering of the children as a result
of the hapless experiences that the elders underwent in this country" said
the director who has gained international recognition for telegrams like
'Amba Yahaluwo' which was based on a novel by T. B. Ilangaratne.
The third film by Sudath revolves around the life of young Sunimal and
his mother who lives in a remote island like village down south. Sunimal's
father was the ferryman and his livelihood lay in ferrying people hither
and thither. This father was the small child's whole world.
The so-called insurrection by the youth for social justice begins and
the ferryman father disappeared suddenly. As many other did during this
time this mother and the son trudged to many police stations and detention
camps in the hope of finding some clue about the bread winner of the family.
'First I wrote the script and went to Deniyaya where the spectra of
terror had struck most violently and found a family which resembled the
family of my story in every detail', the young director related how his
new directorial effort came into being.
The locations were centred in and around places in Kathaluwa and Koggala.
While Chandani Seneviratne, Suminda Sirisena, Duleeka Marapana, Saumaya
Liyanage play the principal roles in "Udu Gan Yamaya" two new faces are
introduced in Mauli Ferdinandez and Thisaru Yuwanika.
Rohan Samaradivakara handled the art direction while make-up was done
by Wasantha Wittachchi. Sarath Fernando directed the music.
In direction Sudath was assisted by Jayaprakash Shivagurunathan.
Meanwhile Sudath's maiden attempt 'Elivena Dawasa" ( The Dawn) is to
represent Sri Lanka at the Canberra Film Festival Australia. The film had
to go through several barriers and examines the life of that class of people
whose life is a never-ending struggle.
Sudath expressing his gratitude to the NFC for its role of financier
of films he has done said "All the upcoming film makers had to thank the
film Development Fund introduced by the National Film Corporation for making
real their dreams and giving it substance".
