Tamil Union fight back after conceding 1st. ings

Niroshan Bandaratilake and Muttaih Muralitharan captured eight wickets
between them as Tamil Union staged a fight back after conceding first innings
points to Galle CC in a Premier League game at Maitland Crescent yesterday.
After being bowled out for 214 in their first innings Tamil Union spun
out Galle CC for 140 runs with Bandaratilake claiming 5 for 63 and Muralitharan
adding three more wickets to his first innings tally of seven wickets.
Needing 136 runs for victory Tamil Union were reduced to 36 for 3 wickets
with Lasitha Malinga capturing 2/16.

Eric Upashantha (2/29) shared all ten wickets as Moors SC were bowled out
for 204 runs at the SSC grounds yesterday.
Enjoying a 86 run first innings lead Colts reached 186 for 8 at close
to lead by 272 runs. Burly one drop batsman Sajith Fernando led the way
with a fine 62.

BRC poised
BRC were poised to take first innings points in their Premier League game
against CCC at the P. Sara Stadium yesterday.
Despite half centuries from Jehan Mubarak and Hemantha Boteju CCC were
272 for 8 wickets still needing a further 88 runs to take first inngs points.

Under 19 discard for the mini World Cup Ishan Mutalip proved the selectors
wrong again when he slammed an unbeaten 142 for Chilaw Marians against
the Air Force in the Premier Plate cricket match being played at Reid Avenue.
Ishan's knock which had 16 boundaries helped the Marians to score 252 in
reply to Air Force's 190. Air Force batting the second time were 157 for
at close.

W.P. Manjula Kumara of Vijitha MMV, Dickwella and Gishanthi Jayakody of
Visakha Vidyalaya carried away the Most Outstanding Sportsman and Sportswoman
Awards at the 11th Sri Lanka Schools Awards Ceremony held at the BMICH
on February 14 (Thursday). This Award Ceremony was organised by the Ministry
of Education and sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd.
Manjula was rewarded for his feat in breaking the Sri Lanka high jump
record and Gishanthi for her excellence in Netball. She represented the
national team at the Asian Netball championships where Sri Lanka emerged
champions.
There were two other special awards given to the up and coming sportsman
and sportswoman which was won by Sri Lanka Badminton champion Niluka Karunaratne
of Royal and the sportswoman going to ace diver Harini Jayasekera also
of Visakha Vidyalaya.
402 recipients were awarded their colours in various sports with the
most number of awards being carried away by the Western Province.
The Chief Guest was Suranimala Rajapakse, Minister of School Education
and Minister of Education with the Guest of Honour being Guiseppe Tarnero,
Managing Director of Nestle Lanka Ltd who gave away the awards.-MSA |
