Minister
wants changes in Emirates deal
While a committee is urgently reviewing the SriLankan Airlines management
agreement with Emirates, Civil Aviation Minister Tilak Marapana
has also proposed some immediate changes in the deal.
Minister Marapana said that at a meeting with Emirates Managing
Director Tim Clark in Colombo he had proposed that the task of authorising
other airlines to operate flights to Colombo should not be at the
discretion of the Emirates but the Department of Civil Aviation
should be given that authority. Mr. Marapana said he had also requested
that the government appointed management team for Sri Lankan Airlines
be given more powers in management decisions.
He said the monopoly enjoyed by Sri Lankan Airlines for ground handling
and catering should also cease and others should be permitted to
enter to promote competitiveness.
