President's
physio settles dues
By Nilika de Silva
The President's physio Mike Chomley who owes the State Rs. six million
for the lease of state land has paid this amount before the ultimatum
given him. However, the Government is losing at least Rs. two million
by way of interest.
The Government is losing this money as the agreement drawn up with
the foreigner does not have a provision to claim interest. The payment
of the Rs. six million was enforced two years after it was due.
Mr. Chomley who is President Kumaratunga's physiologist obtained
188 perches of prime land located behind the Royal Colombo Golf
Course, for a health services centre. The lease of the land had
been worked out through the Board of Investment.
Thimbirigasyaya Divisional Secretary George Kulatunga confirmed
that Mr. Chomley had paid the Rs. six million owed by him, the first
payment on the lease of the land at Model Farm Road, Narahenpita.
However, The Sunday Times learns that the State lost interest amounting
to Rs. two million on this amount which should have been paid two
years ago.
By now Mr. Chomley should have been paying his third instalment
on the lease.
In effect Mr. Chomley has received 188 perches of prime land on
a 20 year lease for Rs. 50 million at Rs. 265,957 a perch.
