PA going separate
ways for May Day
Another split has appeared in the People's Alliance with two main
constituent parties deciding to hold their May Day rally in Colombo
while the main rally is in Haputale.
The PA leadership
recently decided on Haputale as the venue for the main May Day rally,
apparently because it was one of the few areas which stayed loyal
to the PA at the recent local elections.
But the LSSP
and the CP are apparently not happy about the decision. CP leader
Raja Collure said they would hold their May Day rally in Colombo
along with trade unions. However, two representatives would be sent
for the Haputale rally.
Meanwhile, the
ruling UNF, still riding on a wave of popularity, has had a change
of mind over its Galle Face venue for a massive May Day rally. Government
sources said the newly redeveloped and renovated Galle Face Green
might be spoilt by such a rally. Therefore, the UNF was looking
for another venue.
