DIG clears safe
house
Arms and ammunition found in the Athurugiriya Safe House, run by
the Army's Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI), had been
procured by the team of officers concerned by following the correct
procedures in the Army.
This is the
finding of the Police inquiry into activities of the Safe House
carried out under the supervision of Senior DIG, H.M.G.B. Kotakadeniya.
He was assisted by D.S.Y. Samaratunga, Senior Superintendent in
the CID.
In his report
to the Interior Ministry, Mr. Kotakadeniya has asserted that Long
Range Reconnaissance Patrol operated by the Army's Directorate of
Military Intelligence has in the past been involved in undercover
operations. This has had a positive destabilising impact on the
morale of LTTE operatives in the East, he has pointed out. Interior
Minister, John Ameratunga, called upon Mr. Kotakadeniya to supervise
the investigations.
This came after
Kulasiri Udugampola, then SP (Operations) Kandy raided the Safe
House at Athurugiriya on January 2. He seized a cache of weapons.
An officer, four soldiers and an Army informant were taken into
custody. In an exclusive account today, Iqbal Athas, reveals details
of Senior DIG Kotakadeniya's report and the events that followed.
