When
scribes became stars
It
was a blend of tradition with modern, old with new, as epitomised
by the handsome young leader
of the drummers, with his ancient geta beraya and state-of-the-art
mike who set the tone for the evening.
Last Tuesday
evening saw all those working behind the headlines, the scoops,
the ink and the deadlines take the limelight and give recognition
and honour to all those "unsung" scribes, at the Awards
Night for Journalists.
Aptly, the ceremonies
for the Excellence in Journalism Awards 2001 held by the Editors'
Guild
of Sri Lanka at the Mount Lavinia Hotel started off with the honouring
of three veteran journalists for their long and dedicated service
to this hallowed profession.
Many other awards
were also presented for different categories from environmental
reporting to best design and of course, the prestigious Journalist
of the Year 2001 won by Ranjith Jayasinghe of the Lankadeepa.
