The
King is back on the charts
The late
Elvis Presley set up a new record this week when his single debuted
at the top of the UK Chart.
'A Little Less
Conversation', released last Monday swept into the prime spot truly
living up to expectations. Elvis reached the No. 1 position after
a break of almost 25 years. His last No. 1 'Way Down', was notched
on the wave of sympathy following the king of rock 'n' roll's death
on August 16, 1977.
Until 'A Little
Less Conversation', came along, both Elvis and the Beatles tied
for the most number of No. 1 songs in the UK with 17 each. Thus,
Presley has gone a step further taking his grand total of No. 1
songs in the UK to 18. Die hard Elvis fans will probably know the
titles of all the late singer's No. 1 songs in the UK. But for the
much younger music lover, Presley's chart topping hits were 'All
Shook Up' -1957', 'Jail House Rock'-1958', 'One Night/I Got Stung',
'A Fool Such As I/I Need your love Tonight'-1959', 'It's Now or
Never' 1960', 'Are you Lonesome Tonight', 'Wooden Heart', 'Surrender',
'His Latest Flame/Little Sister'-1961, 'Rock A Hula Baby/Can't Help
Falling In Love', 'Good Luck Charm', 'She's Not You', 'Return to
Sender'- 1962, 'Devil In Disguise' -1963, 'Crying In The Chapel'-1965,
'The Wonder of You'-1970 and 'Way Down' in 1977.
''A Little
Less Conversation' was written by MacDavies. It appeared as the
B side of the US single 'Almost In Love' in 1968 but the song did
not get into the top 40. Last year the song appeared on the movie
soundtrack to 'Ocean's II'. It was then selected as a part of the
global TV campaign for Nike to coincide with the World Cup Soccer
tournament. As a result, the demand for the song grew and so came
the remix by Dutch DJ - Tom Holkenborg who was compelled to use
the abbreviation JXL.
Elvis Presley
is the third artiste to record a posthumous No: 1 hit in the UK.
He follows George Harrison and Aaliyah. Six artistes have scored
posthumous No:1 songs in the UK. In addition to those mentioned,
John Lennon, Freddie Mercury and Jackie Wilson too come in the list.
Presley is the only one to reach the position twice after death.
Kylie Minogue's
'Love At First Sight' came into the Chart at No: 2. The singer was
stopped in the tracks by Elvis Presley. Sales figures indicate a
fair distance between the two songs. This is the third single to
be lifted from her very successful 'Fever' album. There's no difference
between Kylie's current whopper and her previous hits. They just
keep chugging along.
The Spiderman
movie has opened in the UK. Now the movie soundtrack has spawned
the hit song 'Hero' performed by rockers Chad Kroeger with guest
star Josey Scott. The drums on the track are played by Matt Cameron
of Pearl Jam. Kroeger is a member of Nickelback while Scott is a
member of Saliva.
Exponents of
hard-core dance music Scooter notched up their 1st top 20 entry
with 'Logical Song' at No: 7. The Anglo-German act tried hard for
three years to attract the numbers for the high end of success.
They dropped
out of the UK scene in 1997 but continued to pulsate Europe, with
new versions of known hits.
Their speeded
up vocal Scooter seems to have hit the right note with the old Supertramp
hit 'The Logical Song!"
Marion 'Suge'
Knight, the rap/hip hop and Death Row label giant wants the public
to know the truth about the happenings at the label. He is said
to be offering his book to publishers in New York. The label was
once the home to Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, TuPac and a couple of other
stars. But it was riddled with stories of rivalry, LA street gangs
and of course the deaths of the Notorious BIG and TuPac Shakur.
Knight was recently released from jail having completed a four year
sentence for assaulting rappers at a studio.
Former East
17 singer Brian Harvey was imprisoned on Friday, June 14 after breaking
the terms of an injunction taken out by his estranged wife Natasha.
Harvey was
arrested after voluntarily reporting to Loughton Police station
the day before for breaking the injunction. Harvey was imprisoned
for 56 days by the Royal Courts of Justice.
His career
has taken a dive since the disbanding of East 17. He was also attacked
outside a Nottingham nightclub in December.
