LTTE assures
support to defuse crisis
The LTTE has assured the Government that it would extend its fullest
support to ease the violence in the Eastern Province, a spokesman
for the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission said yesterday.
He said the
assurance had been given during a meeting between LTTE political
wing leader S P. Thamilchelvan and the Head of the Monitoring Mission
General Trond Furuhovd on Friday.
SLMM spokesman
Teitur Torkelsson told The Sunday Times the LTTE promised it would
assist the government to ease the situation and to avoid more confrontation.
Meanwhile, following discussions with the LTTE, General Furuhovd
was scheduled to hold talks with Peace Secretariat chief Bernard
Gunathilake last night.
