Scrap iron probe: CID to dig deeper
By Tania Fernando
Mystery still hangs over a consignment of aircraft spare parts detected by the Customs last week and CID detectives are going to India for further investigations. The Defence Ministry decided to send the detectives to India as arrangements were made for the consignment to be re-shipped to India as scrap iron.

The 28-year old suspect from Colombo 15 had initially denied any involvement in this shipment and any knowledge of the contents, but later admitted that a friend in India had requested for scrap iron and he had got down this item from a source in Russia.

However, he said that the shipper did not inform him that the goods were to be sent in the name of his company, and he became aware of it only after the shipping agents informed him.

The suspect was produced before a Magistrate and remanded till July 5 while investigations were continuing. The CID has also requested Interpol in Moscow, London and other places to look into some aspects of this case.
