'Unfaithful': The story of Tender & Illicit loveBy Harinda Vidanage
The director of , Flashdance, Jacob's Ladder, Fatal Attraction, 9 1/2 Weeks, Indecent Proposal, and Lolita ,Adrian Lyne whose much talked about movie Unfaithful has been released. The movie's production team, the director and the scriptwriters all bear a high profile in the movie industry. The producer duo of Ann and Arnold Kopelson are famous for their movies Eraser and The Devils Advocate, while the scriptwriters are in the caliber of Alvin sergeant and William Broyles of the Castaway fame.

The story is a remake of the 1969 French film of Claude Chabrol's, La Femme Infidele, which was released in the USA last month as The Unfaithful Wife. The cast includes Richard Gere (Edward Sumner), Diane Lane (Connie Sumner), Olivier Martinez (Paul Martel), Dominic Chianese, Margaret Colin (Sally), Chad Lowe (Bill Stone), Erik Per Sullivan (Charlie). Described by the director of the movie as "an erotic thriller about the body language of guilt," UNFAITHFUL centers on a couple (Gere, Lane) living in the New York city suburbs whose marriage goes dangerously awry when the wife indulges in an adulterous fling."

The story line follows as Edward and Connie Sumner are a wonderfully-maintained middle-aged couple living the American dream. Together with their eight-year-old son, a dog and a housekeeper, they share an enviable life in the suburbs of New York City. But no life goes unchallenged: This happy marriage, dampened by the routines of affluence, falls prey to an outsider when Connie has a fateful collision with a stranger (Paul Martel) on a Soho street. It's an encounter which assaults her with mystery, spontaneity, charm - and risk. It will pull Connie into an affair which will become her obsession.

When Edward innocently learns that his wife has lied to him, suspicion propels him to uncover the devastating details of her infidelity. Tormented by the knowledge, he confronts her lover, only to discover a level of rage within himself that he could never have imagined. He goes on a rampage, brutally murdering her lover. A strange thing happens then however, as she sees a passion in him in his rage that she didn't see in their many years of matrimony. Their romance revitalized, she agrees to help him cover up the crime.

It's exactly the kind of movie you want Adrian Lyne to be doing It's several different movies wrapped into one. First it's about what happens when a [married] person is unfaithful, then it becomes a thriller, finally it becomes a moralistic drama which portrays the strength of bond experienced only in matrimony. It runs over two hours, and has a lot of heat. As written, the Lane-Martinez sex scenes are great. Impulsive, fevered, intense. The kind of couplings only illicit lovers can have.

Lane, who was excellent three years ago as another cheating wife in A Walk on the Moon, delivers a stand-out performance in Unfaithful. If the reports from movie critics are true, this will be a comeback for Lyne, who hasn't had a real smoker since Fatal Attraction, which came out 15 years ago. Unfaithful's distributor, 20th Century Fox, released the movie a week after Spider-Man and a week before Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones. It was sold as an adult alternative as the season did not deal with movies reserved as real adult entertainment. This will be a movie one will regret if missed.
