Thondaman's
dispute with police settled
By Tania Fernando
All charges have been dropped and the driving licence handed back
after an investigation was carried out with regard to the accident
in which driver of Minister Arumugam Thondaman was involved.
ASP Munidasa
said that no police officers would be transferred and that the matter
had been settled amicably.
Interior Minister
John Amaratunga who had to intervene when Minister Thondaman refused
to leave the Borella Police Station said no policeman would be transferred.
"I visited the police station to ensure that there was no embarrassment
caused to the government. When I went there, Minister Thondaman
was seated on the bench saying he was being ill-treated."
On Tuesday night,
Minister Thondaman's official vehicle collided with the vehicle
of the Borella OIC near the Ayurvedic Hospital roundabout.
Although the
matter was settled amicably between the drivers, Minister Thondaman
turned up at the station later in the night and demanded an impartial
inquiry be held by the DIG immediately.
Mr. Thondaman
told a news conference he went to the station because although the
matter was settled between the drivers, the SSP had insisted on
a statement from the driver of his vehicle.
